The Universal Periodic Review

South Sudan was reviewed by UPR WG 40, in January of 2020. It received 258 recommendations and it supported 222 recommendations at the adoption of its UPR outcome at Human Rights Council 50, in July 2022 (an increase of 9.3% with respect to the 2nd cycle). Supported recommendations related to: Legal and general framework of implementation, universal and cross-cutting issues, civil and political rights, economic, social, and cultural rights, women’s rights, and rights of other vulnerable groups and persons.

What is the Universal Periodic Review ?

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR)1 is a unique mechanism of the Human Rights Council that calls for each UN Member State to undergo a peer review of its human rights records every 4.5 years. South Sudan has participated in both the Second (2016) and Third (2022) Cycles of Universal Periodic Review.

South Sudan’s acceptance of 222 out of 258 recommendations (during the 2022 UPR cycle 3) attested to the government’s commitment towards addressing legal and general frameworks, and support for the implementation of universal and cross-cutting issues. The South Sudan Human Rights Information Portal is a graphic tracker of South Sudan’s implementation progress against the Universal Periodic Review Cycle three (3) recommendations; a benchmark for advocacy and implementation fast-tracking, and a data set for Cycle 4 reporting
